LANGKAWI TRIP 2016 - FINAL DAY: PANORAMA LANGKAWI

PANORAMA LANGKAWI

Today was the final day in Langkawi and we started the day rather early. We woke up as early as 0700hrs so that we can head for breakfast at 0730hrs. We wanted to reach Panorama Langkawi by 0830hrs (that was the opening time). The previous day, our attempt at buying the tickets online was a failure and hence, we had no choice but to reach Panorama Langkawi early, to queue for the tickets.

We managed to reach Panorama Langkawi at around 0840hrs, and compared to the previous day, the carpark was rather empty. However, after walking to the ticket counter, we saw that there were Qs forming already. Not as bad as the previous day, but still we had to queue.

There are 5 counters. Here is the breakdown of which counter sells which ticket:

Counter 1:
Private Gondola: RM460 (for 4 pax)
VIP Gondola: RM550 (for 3 pax)
Bottom Glass Gondola: RM95 (per person)
Express Lane: RM95 (per person)

*Those who buy Express Lane tickets will travel in a normal gondola.

Counter 2:
This counter serves those who purchased their tickets online, tour agencies and large groups.

Counters 3 to 5:
These counters are for those who wish to purchase the basic ticket packages.
Adult (International): RM45
Child (International): RM32
Adult (MyKad holder): RM30
Child (MyKad holder): RM22

Visit their website for more details:
http://www.panoramalangkawi.com/tickets/

We managed to buy the basic tickets after queuing for about 30 minutes. Visitors are sent to the boarding area in batches according to 15 minute intervals. When we bought our tickets, the time was 0915hrs and our boarding time was 1030hrs. While waiting for batch to be called, we walked around the area. Eventually our batch was called and when we walked up to the 2nd floor to the boarding area, we were shocked. There was a very long queue which we knew would take at least more than an hour to clear. We noticed that the Express Lane was empty and without hesitation we went down to the ticket counter to "top up" the remainder RM50 per person. We were given a green sticker each, oranges (as it was the CNY) and shot glasses as souvenirs. We went back to the 2nd floor and went through the Express Lane. Soon we were on the cable car, riding up to the Middle Station.

Thinking back now, if we had not bought the Express Lane tickets, our total waiting time just to get on the cable car would have been close to 3hrs.

- 30 minutes to queue to purchase tickets
- 1 hour to wait for batch to be called
- 1 hour plus to queue at the boarding gate

SKYCAB

There are 3 stations for SkyCab ride. Base Station, Middle Station and Top Station. You can choose not to alight at the Middle Station and continue to the Top Station. I would advise you to alight at the Middle Station though, as there is platform for you to take in the amazing view!

The ride to the Middle Station is actually the scariest. From the Base Station, the cable car will only pass through only TWO towers before ascending to the Middle Station. After the 2nd tower, the cable car is almost travelling in a vertical direction. Throughout the ride, I tried to keep very still. Haha!

Photo: By me

From the Middle Station to the Top Station, the ride is pretty much horizontal and it's also a short distance.

SKYBRIDGE

After reaching the Top Station, you must go towards your left to the ticket counter to purchase the entry fee to SkyBridge. If you wish to go via steps, the fee is only RM5. But if you want to take the SkyGlide, it will cost you RM15 per person. The SkyGlide is basically a lift that will bring you down to the SkyBridge. We saw that there was a long queue at the SkyGlide to go down to the SkyBridge, and hence we decided to take the steps route. If you are going via the steps, you will be asked to sign an indemnity form.

Proceeding down the steps, we soon realised it's rather dangerous. The steps aren't the proper staircases, but they're stone steps. The railing to hold on to is only on one side and the railing itself is just built out of hollow metal bars. Some of the railings were shaky. If you're not afraid of heights, and if you're a but adventurous, the steps route is for you. Do take note that you'd have to wear proper footwear when taking this route as the ground is uneven. Walking at a steady pace would take you 10 minutes to reach the SkyBridge. Once you're at the SkyBridge, you'll eventually forget the dangerous route you took upon seeing the view.

CHECK-OUT

From Panorama Langkawi, we headed back to the hotel to check-out. The night before, I had asked the receptionist whether late check-out was possible and what will be the fees incurred. (Our check-out time was 1200hrs). I was told that no charge will be made if we checked-out before 1300hrs, and there will be a RM10 per hr/per room charge if we checked-out between 1300hrs to 1700hrs. Beyond that, we will be charged the full amount per room. I also asked if payment needed to be made prior, or during the check-out process. I was told that we only needed to pay during the check-out process. Hence, I told the receptionist that we'll be checking out by 1400hrs.

However, while driving back to the hotel, we received a phone call from the hotel to ask us to proceed to check-out as soon as possible and preferably before 1400hrs. This made us a little upset, cause it did feel like we were being chased out and we already did inform that we'll be checking out by 1400hrs. We reached the hotel around 1310hrs and I approached the receptionist and saw that the duty manager was there too. I explained to him what happened and he informed me that the staff who attended to me the night before, didn't pass on the information to the staff who took over this morning. Hence, the hotel staff made the phone call to ask us to check-out. (They thought that we had gone AWOL). The duty manager gave us till 1400hrs to check-out saying that they need to ready the room for the next guests. Since we had time, we decided to have a quick shower before checking-out.

As per the information given to me by the hotel staff the previous night, from 1300hrs, we will be charged RM10 per hr/per room. However, the duty manager waived the extra charge off and I only collected back my RM100 deposit that I made on the first day. I thanked him for his gesture and we then made our way for lunch.

LUNCH

We went back to HMR (Hotel Malaysia Restaurant) to have a sumptuous lunch before heading to the airport. Once we saw the food, we truly had forgotten the little "episode" we had at the hotel.

Look at the mouth-watering dishes!

Yummy!

My "plate" of goodness!

Yet again, the cost of my lunch was about RM10. Oh, and the cup of coffee was just too good. It was so good, that I forget to take a picture of it. :p

GOODBYE LANGKAWI!

While driving to the airport, I sat in the car reminiscing the entire trip. A bitter-sweet moment indeed. We all felt that a 4D3N trip isn't enough to explore the entire island and everything it has to offer. We'll definitely plan for a longer trip in the near future!

AirAsia's Self Check-In Kiosk

If you are flying with AirAsia, you can proceed to this self check-in kiosk to get your luggage tags printed. There are 4 kiosks, but when I was there only 2 was working. Nevertheless, the process was easy. After which, you can proceed to the check-in counters to drop your luggages.

As the sun set during our flight to KLIA signifying the end of the day, it also signified the end of the short trip to Langkawi. Overall, I had a wonderful and a memorable time there. I'd definitely go back there again, to experience other things like parasailing or the sun-set cruise!

BLACK SAND BEACH

We had planned to spend the first half of the day at the Panorama Langkawi but after seeing the queue at the counters, we felt we would end up having to spend the entire day there and thus we decided to postpone our SkyCab ride and the visit to the SkyBridge to the next day.

It was actually a good decision that we made as we were able to visit other places throughout the day. Since this was our last full day in Langkawi, we decided to go pretty much one full round around Langkawi. So, from Panorama Langkawi we drove to Pantai Pasir Hitam (Black Sand Beach). I was interested to see if the sand is really black in colour. While on the way to the Black Sand Beach, we saw a road-side stall selling some fruits, drinks and food. It was also very near to the shore and hence we made a quick stop-over. The stall was actually a make-shift lorry and they were selling Chendol. I decided to grab a cup and head to the seashore. It was very VERY windy!

Location of Pantai Pasir Hitam (Black Sand Beach):

The wind + the sound of the waves was simply therapeutic. I almost wanted to take a nap there!

A cold cup of Chendol; The amazing breeze; Perfect afternoon!

After the short stopover, we continued our way to the Black Sand Beach which was merely a few minutes away. You will see a few shops selling clothes and other souvenirs on the side of the road. There is a small car park and toilets there as well. After doing some quick shopping we headed down to the beach.

As you can see, the sand is black in colour. I saw a stall selling this sand in small souvenir bottles for RM3 per bottle!

AYER HANGAT VILLAGE

We didn't have a proper lunch and I decided to just grab some food from this stall! After doing some more "light" shopping, we drove to Ayer Hangat Village. I knew about this place from my previous trip to Langkawi in 2011.

Location of Ayer Hangat Village:

As you can see, Ayer (Air) Hangat Village is near Pantai Pasir Hitam. The entrance fee is RM5 and there is no time limit on your stay there.

If you want to, you can book a room for 2/3/4/5 pax to enjoy a jacuzzi room for 1 hour at the village.

3 pax - RM285
4 pax - RM359
5 pax - RM399

Alternatively, you can choose to relax at the "free" hot spring well as shown above. The top most tier (the one that is in between the two wooden planks) is where the hot water comes from. It then flows into other tiers making the water less hot. One aspect about this place is that it is not covered by a shelter and if it is a hot day, then you are definitely going to feel the heat.

My feet felt better after awhile!

FOOT MASSAGE

The Spa at Ayer Hangat Village.

After sitting at the hot spring for awhile, we decided to go a for a massage at the resident spa area. Due to the time and also budget, we went for a foot massage instead of a full body massage. They were having a promotion where they charged RM35 for 30 minutes.

Just before the foot massage!

The foot massage was really good! After soaking my feet in this lemon+herbs filled warm water, the masseuse began the foot massage. She first used a scrub on my feet before doing simple massages.

After which I was asked to lie down here, face up. Then she put a cool towel to cover my eyes and continued with the rest of the foot massage. It was here that the masseuse was more thorough. The massage was so relaxing that I actually dozed off for a few minutes. I wished I had gone for the full body massage but nevertheless, it was really good experience at this spa. It was not crowded and after soaking your feet in the hot spring, having a foot massage only made me feel more relaxed!

TEA TIME!

While returning back to our hotel, we stopped by for tea along the roadside adjacent to Idaman Suri. It's a shopping mall along Jalan Ayer Hangat.

We just grabbed a few curry puffs, ondeh-ondeh, donuts and other snacks that I really don't know the name of. The tea however was simply amazing!

FINAL DINNER AT LANGKAWI

Last dinner in Langkawi! :-(
Photo: By me

For our last dinner at Langkawi, we went to local "food court" near Azio Hotel which we happened to pass by while driving. It looks similar to a food court in Singapore with different stalls selling various kinds of food. We were there around 2200hrs and that was when the evening crowd was clearing. I ordered Nasi Goreng Daging Merah as I've never tried it before. The dish came with fried rice, a fried egg and slices of beef in some sweet sauce. The dish was really nice and filling!

We finished our dinner around 2330hrs and headed back to the hotel to do our final packing. Before that, I went online to try to book the tickets for the SkyCab, but when I went to the booking/payment page, I was bitterly disappointed.

Payment options for online purchasing
Photo: Screenshot

As you can see, there is no Visa or Mastercard available for payment. Which means, unless you have one of the bank accounts/cards mentioned here, you won't be able to make online purchases for your tickets. Do also note, even if you had one of these cards/bank accounts, you will be making an online bank transfer, and not really a payment. Further reading of the online payment T&Cs inform us that after the transfer has been made, a confirmation email will be sent to you and that you have to show this email at the ticket counter when collecting your tickets.

As we didn't have any of the cards/bank accounts, we had no choice but to head to the ticket counters early tomorrow to purchase the tickets.

The last full day at Langkawi had come to an end! ;-(

BREAKFAST AND DRIVE TO PANTAI CENANG

The hotel package that we booked came with breakfast for our entire stay at Hotel Bahagia. The food wasn't fantastic, but it was sufficient to load up energy before you carry on for the day.

Breakfast spread:

  1. Coffee and Tea.
  2. Bread section which included white bread that you could toast, and a few spreads. They also had pastries that you would see at a local bakery near your house. (Not Bread Talk standard)
  3. Mushroom soup, porridge, nasi lemak and fried rice which were in separate rice/steam cookers.
  4. A cereal section which only had 2 types of cereal.
  5. Drink section which had cordial drinks. (Orange, syrup, etc)
  6. Fried eggs (scrambled)
  7. Mini hot dogs.
  8. Roti prata that was cut up into smaller slices.
  9. White rice.
  10. Kway Teow.
  11. Maggie Goreng.
  12. Mee Goreng.
  13. Bee Hoon.
  14. Chicken Curry with lots of chicken in it.
Breakfast is from 0730hrs to 1000hrs.

This was just about it for the daily breakfast that was served at Hotel Bahagia. My favourite dishes were the Maggie Goreng and the Chicken Curry. We had our breakfast at around 0830hrs as we wanted to reach Pantai Cenang by 0930hrs. Driving to Pantai Cenang, I soon realised that for the eve of CNY, the place was rather 'empty', which is good!

PANTAI CENANG & START OF JET SKI TOUR

We reached Pantai Cenang around 0945hrs and parked our car beside AB Motel and made our way to the beach to try to look for the DH Water Sports booth. When we reached the spot, we realised that they weren't around. For a moment, I thought we were robbed of our RM100 deposit! But after asking around other booths, they told us that DH Water Sports should be arriving soon. We waiting till around 1000hrs and that's when the staff of DH Water Sports arrived in their MPVs, pulling their jet skis in tow. They starting setting up their booth and while waiting, I decided to take in the awesome morning view of the beach.

Prior to the trip, I was contemplating to use my Asus ZenFone 2 handphone to record some videos while on the trip, but I eventually decided to purchase an action camera. I didn't want to fork out on the latest GoPro and bought the Valore Wi-Fi Action Camera sold at Challenger.

I didn't take any pictures while on the jet ski tour, but here are some videos that caught using the Valore Action Camera.

Check out the video here:

Going on this Jet Ski Tour was probably the best things that I did during this trip! Riding the jet ski on open waters, with an unblocked view of the sea disappearing into the horizon was just an amazing experience! The previous time I came to Langkawi, I did go on a jet ski, but it was only for 5 minutes. My 2 other friends and I booked a jet ski for 15 minutes and each of us had 5 minutes to ride the jet ski. This time around, it was a 3 hour tour! It took me awhile to get used to manoeuvring the jet ski on 'choppy' waters but after awhile, I got used to it.

The few places we visited on the tour:

  1. Pulau Dayang Bunting & Lake of the Pregnant Maiden (We spent about an hour here where we could swim in the lake)
    • The lake is really nice to swim in and the water is not salty at all. However, it is the walk to the lake that may be of some concern to some. You have to climb up a flight of stone steps and then make your way down a steeper set of steps to reach the lake. To be honest, I got tired walking to the lake.
  2. Beras Basah Island
    • The beach at this island is really nice and where you can just sit and relax.
  3. Eagle Feeding spot

As we made our final ride back to Pantai Cenang, the tour guide let us go full throttle on the jet ski. As the waters near the shore weren't as 'choppy' as the ones further out, I confidently hit top speed. Before we knew it, the tour had ended and we returned to the shore. We sat around the beach to just enjoy the afternoon sun for awhile before going back to our car to drive to our hotel. It was around 1400hrs when we ended the tour.

EAGLE SQUARE & DINNER

In the evening, we headed to the Eagle Square which is located beside Kuah Jetty. At the entrance, you can see some shops where they sell some nice souvenirs.

We headed for dinner at this restaurant that was beside Hotel Malaysia Restaurant. (The Indian food place that we had lunch on Day 1). The restaurant is called Sajian Murni Restaurant Ikan Bakar.

2nd Ikan Bakar!

The food here was tastier than the supper we had on Day 1. Especially the Ikan Bakar!

Dinner:

  1. Ikan Bakar - (The fish was a bigger one than the one we had on Day 1)
  2. Fried Sotong
  3. Kang Kong stir fry
  4. White rice
  5. Beef soup - (Large bowl)
  6. Drinks
Total cost: RM80

CHILLING IN THE ROOM

Once I was back in my room, I switched onto HBO and they were showing a movie called 'Unbroken'. The movie was set during 1943, during WWII. It was about a plane crew being shot down during a SAR (Search and Rescue) mission and had to live on inflatable rafts for a few weeks. Eventually 2 of them get caught by the Japanese and are taken in as POWs. The rest of the story shows how the main character, Louie Zamperini, is treated at the POW camp and what happens after the war ended.

It was a really nice movie to just sit back and watch, although I was rather frustrated by the constant loss of signal of the channel. I was also able to watch some football highlights on Fox Sports. Manchester United went to Stamford Bridge, lead 1-0 for most of the match and Chelsea equalised in injury time. The match ended 1-1.

Not really a good way to end Day 2 though!

LANGKAWI TRIP 2016 - DAY 1: FLYING TO LANGKAWI

DRIVING TO KLIA

And so the day finally came for my short trip to Langkawi. We started our drive to KLIA at around 0700hrs from JB to catch our 1350hrs flight. The roads weren't as congested as we had expected which was good. We made a stopover at Machap for breakfast and continued our drive. We were way ahead of schedule and arrived at KLIA at around 1130hrs. Our flight was from KLIA2 and thus we parked at Gateway@KLIA2, 7th floor.

After unloading our luggage, we then proceeded to the departure hall to check-in our luggage. Since I had already done the web-check in, we just needed to drop our check-in luggage at the AirAsia counters. Baggage drop took us about 15 minutes to complete and we then proceeded to walk around the airport to kill time. We stopped by KFC to have a drink before proceeding to our boarding gate.

THE HOLIDAY BEGINS

We finally reached our destination! Although our flight journey time was stated as 1 hour, in actual fact, we only flew for about 30 minutes. The remainder time was buffer I guess. Nevertheless, we had a smooth flight, though I had lot of air pressure built up in my ears and it hurt a bit. I guess I need to fly more to 'train' my ears!

This was my first time experiencing disembarkation from the plane and on to the tarmac. I wanted to take a video of the whole experience, but the ground crew stopped me. After going through immigration we had to wait for our luggage to arrive on the baggage collection belt. While waiting, we approached some of the car rental counters to ask for the rate to rent a car for 4 days. Due to the holiday season, a car that would have cost RM60 - RM70 per day, was now quoted as RM90 per day. After enquiring further, we were told that the car being offered is the Perodua Viva, which we felt was small. It was then we decided to call our car rental contact and told him that we are willing to pay RM90 per day, but for a bigger car. He offered us the Perodua Axia, which is a 1.0L car.

Total cost for car rental: RM90 * 3 = RM270
Period: 5th Feb, 1600hrs to 8th Feb, 1600hrs.

We decided to check-in at the hotel and then go for lunch, and off we went. Using the Sygic GPS app,  we managed to find our way to our hotel, Hotel Bahagia (HB). HB is located in Kuah Town and the drive from the airport was about 25 minutes.

Our Hotel
Photo: By me

As we only made our trip booking 3 weeks prior, we weren't left with much choices for our hotels. I actually wanted to stay near Pantai Cenang which is where most of the water sports activities are held, but all the hotels that were within our budget were fully booked. Hence, we decided on HB which looked decent from the pictures and reviews online and it was also within our budget.

Hotel website: www.hotel-bahagia.com

CHECKING-IN & LUNCH/DINNER

Upon checking in I had to pay RM100 as deposit which will be returned upon check-out. We were given our rooms and when I went into mine, the first impression that I got was that the room was small. It had enough space for a queen size bed and two bedside tables. However, the bathroom was rather spacious and I even felt that they could have fitted a small bathtub in it, but all it had was a shower. When I inserted the key-card into the 'room-activation' (I'm not sure what you call that) slot, I noticed that there was a power trip. I immediately told the reception and they sent their electrician to sort things out. The TV remote wasn't working as well and that too need some attention.

We left our luggage in our rooms and headed out for lunch/dinner. When I came to Langkawi in 2011, I remember eating at this Indian restaurant which served food that was like home cooked. It was about 1700hrs when we went out to eat.

A happy place.

Simple food. Happy heart.

You can help yourself to any amount of dishes and you can top up the rice at no extra charge. They charge on how many items you take and not really the quantity. My simple yet fulfilling lunch cost me RM9+.

PANTAI CENANG & SUPPER

By the time we had our lunch/dinner, it was already past 1800hrs. We drove to Pantai Cenang where I wanted to check out the prices for a jet ski tour. From the little research that I did online prior to the trip, I found out that Pantai Cenang is the beach where most of the water sports activities are held. I had also read online about the few companies that offer jet ski tours, and the one company that stood out was Mega Water Sports. So the search for MWS started.

Panoramic shot of the beach.
Photo: By me
Along the beach we soon realised that there were many tents (companies) that offer various water sport activities, and most of them weren't advertised online. I couldn't find MWS at the beach and proceeded to enquire about jet ski tours at other tents. After speaking to a few (tried to negotiate the price), we finally settled on DH Water Sports. We negotiated and managed to slash RM100 off from the initial rate given for a jet ski. We decided to book two jet skis for Saturday's tour. DH Water Sports is located in front of AB Motel, along the beach.

We made a RM100 deposit and we were told to be at the same location by 0930hrs on Saturday. My wish to go on a jet ski tour was about to be fulfilled in a few hours. I was expecting to catch the sunset at Pantai Cenang, but it was a rather cloudy day and it also started to rain a little. We then headed back to our hotel to freshen up and head out for supper after that.

Back at the hotel, I had time to browse through the TV channels and was pleased that HBO and Fox Sport were available. Although the quality wasn't anywhere near HD, it was good enough. It was also then I realised that there was a safe box in the room which I could use, however there were no instructions on how to set the password for the safe box. I called the reception and they sent their electrician to teach me how to operate the safe box.

After a nice hot shower, we were driving around to look for a nice 'supper place'. I then recommended that we head to the place where I had gone to during my 2011 trip. This place was at the carpark just opposite the Azio Hotel, (which I stayed in during my previous trip) and I remember having a nice plate of Ikan Bakar there.

  1. Ikan Bakar - RM35
  2. Chicken Satay x 10 sticks - RM6
  3. Kway Teow - RM6
  4. Drinks - RM8
PS: I was too busy gulping down the delicious Kway Teow that I forgot to take a picture of it. :-)

Day 1 at Langkawi was a relaxing one. The real fun began on Day 2!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

USEFUL INFORMATION:

Flying to Langkawi from KL

After comparing prices and due to the exchange rate, it is cheaper to drive to KLIA to fly to Langkawi, then to fly from Singapore directly to Langkawi. You'll save on the air fare. Driving to KLIA will require only one car (assuming a family of 4), and the fuel and toll cost is for everyone. However, airfare is per head. Not only will you be saving money, but you'll get to go on a mini road trip to KL as well!

Parking at KLIA

It was recently announced on http://www.thestar.com.my, that the rate for parking at Gateway@KLIA2 is RM46 per day and RM20 from the 4th day onwards. Do take note that upon reaching the car park gantry, you can either pay using your Touch 'n' Go card or you can decide to take a ticket at the gantry. If you decide to take the ticket at the gantry, you must keep it safely. You will have to use this ticket to pay at the Autopay machines on the day you are driving out of KLIA. Lost of this ticket will cost you RM50 per day. (So if you have parked your car for 4 days and you lose the ticket, you will have to pay RM200)

Hotel Choice

If you are planning to have water sports for the major part of your trip, then it is advisable to book a hotel/motel along Pantai Cenang. The price may be higher than some hotels in Kuah Town, but you'll be saving time in travelling, which also may translate to saving fuel cost or even not having to rent a car. Pantai Cenang is nearer to the airport compared to Kuah Jetty. Hence, if you are flying to Langkawi, Pantai Cenang is the place to stay.

Jet ski Tour

Don't accept the starting price that is quoted to you. Try to negotiate for a cheaper price. If you are renting more than one jet ski for the tour, than you'll have a better chance to be offered a discounted price.
